I purchased this printer through a local retailer and was debating between the HP and a similarly priced wireless printer from Brother. The replacement toner cartridges are a bit more for the HP, but then again, they come with the drum assembly built in. This greatly reduces maintenance and potential hardware failures.
Setup:
As for setup, under Windows it’s a snap. Put the CD in and follow the directions.
Under Linux (I’m using Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)) the install was easy. I visited [...] web site and downloaded the drivers. From there, I just followed the directions on the web page and it works like a charm.
I’ve not used it with a Mac, but I did note that OSX is listed on the box.
Printer quality:
As for the printer itself. It has a very small footprint on the desk when the paper trays are not extended, and a small one when they are. It has excellent monochrome print quality and is very fast. As with all laser printers, the ink is waterproof once it’s on the paper. I’d recommend it any day of the week.
The printer’s body feels solid when you handle it. The input trays are similarly solid. The output tray feels a bit light, but as long as you aren’t abusing the tray, it’ll be more than sufficient.
HP Experience:
For me, HP printers are generally very reliable and always has good driver support both under Windows and Linux.

I PURCHASED THIS PRINTER FOR MY WIFE. SHE COMPLAINS ABOUT “ALL THOSE WIRES AROUND HER COMPUTER” SO I ORDERED THIS ONE. ALTHOUGH MORE EXPENSIVE THAN MY HP LASERJET P1006, IT IS WIRELESS SO I SUPPOSE THAT JUSTIFIES THE ADDITIONAL $60 COST. ANYWAY, I SET IT UP BUT COULD NOT GET IT TO WORK WIRELESSLY. A CALL TO HP TECHS GOT IT WORKING AND WIFE IS VERY PLEASED WITH IT, AS AM I. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

While I am a MechEng, I am an old one. Was apprehesive to find out how hard it would be to set up a wireless network and a wireless printer in one day.
Wellll, I did it in an hour before work! And so far the printer is working PERFECT. Will post an updated review in a week.

Now after living with it a week, the constant hawking from the driver to get me to buy more supplies is irritating. Worse, the “Wireless” printer requires you to press a continue button in an on-screen dialog box to continue a manual print job; I discovered upon reading the manual the alternative to interacting with the software is to open the toner lid; huh? Well HP, think twice before using “professional” nomenclature on a cheap product like this.
The best thing about this printer is it’s manufactured in Vietnam. Priced Side by side with the Samsung ML-2525W which is made in China.
Fast Fast firstpage and the printer prints faster than the computer spools. Supersmall footprint.
Harks of the old HP before the Compaq destroyer merger.
The install is a laughing joke, the box says plug and print leading one to believe there is not software to be installed. The printer pulls software from the web is all.
The setup instructions are difficult and unclear icons. I did not follow the instructions, but used the WPS setup on my netgear router and it connected to the printer without any fuss (atypical of netgear). The HP setup mentions nothing about WPS, but sends you on a confusing loop of first connecting USB to setup wireless. I did not want to enumerate yet another USB device, so I experimented.
The bottom line: HUGE bang for the buck. Less is more and with this one teetering on the brink of function over flash I am impressed.
The flash is a partially glossy black smooth finish combined with some touchable texture. It looks nicer than putty and since it’s the same color as toner might endure better, but it would be better if it was all low sheen as eventually it will become scratched.
This work-pony replaced an aging LaserJet 6P and delivers about the same functionality with more speed.
I needed a simple, quick, versatile, flexible, inexpensive monochrome printer and this one floated to the top because of its manufacturing roots.
BAD….. The driver frequently pops up a supplies advertisement…. annoying and very NON-professional.

The HP P1102W is a great laser printer with sharp printouts and fast speeds.
My only problem with this printer was with the wireless connectivity on Macs. With a PC, HP has included a Smart Install option on the CD that works like a Wizard to create your wireless connection. But with Macs, there is very little help either on the CD or in the manual. I had to call HP technical support for assistance. They had me go to System Preferences to do a manual setup. The USB setup went fine, though.
With other HPs I have purchased, they have made it extremely easy to set up a wireless connection, but not with the HP P1102w. Yes, this printer is compatible with Macs, but HP has made it harder to set up wirelessly than a PC.
